02 Introduction

First Aid Introduction in first aid our aim is to look after and treat the casualty until further assistance arrives (e.g. Ambulance). We are usually able to devote all our resources to that one casualty. When someone is seriously injured or sick it is advisable to always call the Ambulance and bring the Ambulance to the casualty not to take the casualty to the Ambulance or Medical Care. If in doubt you should phone the Ambulance and follow their advice.

Definition of Emergency First Aid

First Aid is the initial emergency care given immediately upon arrival at the scene to an ill or injured person and continues until professional medical assistance takes over the care of the casualty e.g. Ambulance or doctor.

A First Aider's role is to:

  • Preserve life.
  • Protect the unconscious casualty.
  • Prevent the condition worsening.
  • Promote recovery.
  • Call for medical assistance.

In a multiple casualty situation when assistance is not immediately available, the role of the first aider is slightly different. The first aider must sort out (triage) the casualties.

A first aider's main aim is to do the greatest good for the greatest number of casualties.

The first aider must set priorities and then commit the available resources to the casualties who will most benefit. The greater the number of casualties, the greater the need for practicing 'triage'.

What to do in an emergency when someone is injured

  • Check for dangers.
  • Count the casualties.
  • Call 000 and pass the information on to the ambulance service. This will enable them to dispatch sufficient resources.
  • Commence treatment.
  • Remember the unconscious casualty has priority over the conscious casualty. Get assistance from bystanders where possible.
  • Tell the Ambulance all details about the location especially if in a remote location of difficult terrain

Always remember you are the First Aider and this means that you are only giving First Treatment and the casualty will receive more treatment from others (E.g. Ambulance and Medical Personnel)

  • Your main aim is to keep the casualty alive, safe and prevent the condition worsening until more experienced help arrives.
